Short version: Enroll before you spend. Touch the credits that match trips you would take anyway. Skip the ones that need a lifestyle you do not have. Pay every statement in full.
This is how we run the Amex Platinum we already hold. Not a ranking. Not a reason to open another card. Not a redo of Platinum vs Reserve. For how this card sits next to the rest of the wallet, use the six-card wallet routine. For the series index, start at Use Every Benefit.
PointFam is independent. We are not DoD or any branch. Confirm terms on the issuer site before you rely on a number.
Most years we use three Platinum benefits on purpose: the airline fee credit, the hotel credit, and Uber Cash. Most years we skip CLEAR+. We use TSA PreCheck / Global Entry as travelers; the fee-credit claim path stays optional. Everything else sits in enroll-or-skip until it earns its keep. For a researched weekend stack that builds on the hotel credit, airline fee credit, and Uber Cash we use (not a lived combined weekend diary), see Amex Platinum Weekend Trip for Free Stack.
We hold Amex Platinum along with Chase Sapphire Reserve, Hilton Aspire, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Delta SkyMiles Reserve, and Citi Double Cash. We do not hold Capital One Venture X. Every card in our house, including Platinum, is on autopay for the full statement balance. Fee relief can change the break-even math. It does not change the discipline. If interest is in the picture, most of these credits stop being the point. Longer take: What Dave Ramsey Gets Wrong (And What He Gets Right).

Enrollment map (what we treat as auto, enroll, or skip)
The Platinum trap is not the annual fee alone. The Basic Card annual fee is $895. The trap is spending before enrollment, or treating every credit as free money when half of them need a click you never made.
| Benefit | How we treat it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Airline fee credit | Enroll first (select airline), then spend | Fees charged before airline selection do not count. Up to $200 per calendar year, one selected airline, incidental fees. We use this most years. Deeper select-airline-first dig-in: How to Use the Amex Platinum Airline Fee Credit. |
| Hotel credit | Auto (no enrollment) | Up to $600 per year as $300 Jan-Jun and $300 Jul-Dec on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection via Amex Travel. THC needs a 2-night minimum. We use this most years. |
| Uber Cash | Add the Card in Uber | Up to $200 per year ($15 monthly plus $20 in December), U.S. only. Unused monthly Cash does not roll. We use this most years. Dig-in for Eats without a ride: How to Use Amex Platinum Uber Cash on Uber Eats. |
| Resy | Enrollment required | Up to $400 per year ($100 quarterly). Optional for you; researched how-to dig-in: How to Use the Amex Platinum Resy Dining Credit. |
| lululemon | Enrollment required | Up to $300 per year ($75 quarterly) at U.S. retail (excluding outlets) and lululemon.com. Caps are per Card Account. Optional for you; researched how-to dig-in (Amex statement credit vs separate retailer Military/First Responders 15% wall): Amex Platinum lululemon Credit and the Separate Military Discount. |
| Digital entertainment | Enrollment required | Up to $300 per year ($25 monthly). Optional for you. |
| Priority Pass | Enrollment required | Part of Global Lounge Collection. Enroll before travel. Lounge access in concept is not the same as a Priority Pass membership you already activated. |
| Hilton Honors Gold / Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite | Enrollment required | Status is not automatic. Enroll before you expect elite treatment at Hilton or Marriott. Optional not we-use until Nate confirms. |
| CLEAR+ | Listed; skip in our house most years | Up to $219 per calendar year. Per Card Account. We skip most years. |
| Global Entry or TSA PreCheck | We use as travelers; fee credit optional | Global Entry $120 every 4 years, or PreCheck up to $85 (5-year). We use the programs as travelers. Claiming the fee credit on a given cycle stays optional. |
| Oura | Enrollment required | Up to $200 per calendar year. Reader choice. Do not invent household use. |
| Equinox | Enrollment required | Up to $300 per calendar year. Reader choice. |
| Walmart+ | Enroll or not as you choose | Up to $155 per year (up to $12.95 monthly plus tax). Reader choice. |
| Uber One | Enroll or not as you choose | Up to $120 per calendar year for an auto-renewing membership. Reader choice. |
Enrollment is not a personality test. It is a filter. If a credit needs a partner you never visit, leave it off. We track with memory plus the issuer apps, not a second job with a spreadsheet.
Credits calendar we actually run
We do not chase every line item to "beat" the fee. We run three clocks.
Airline fee credit. Select the airline in your Amex Benefits area before you put incidental fees on the Card. Examples of incidentals on the card page include checked bags, in-flight refreshments, change fees, overweight or oversize bags, lounge day passes, pet kennel fees, and phone reservation fees. Tickets, upgrades, and mileage purchases are not incidental. Cap is up to $200 per calendar year on that one airline, per Card Account. Additional Card spend can count toward the same cap. For the select-airline-first trap, qualifying carriers, and Wi-Fi gotchas, see the airline fee credit dig-in.
Hotel credit halves. Up to $300 in the January through June window and up to $300 in July through December, for a $600 calendar-year max. Book prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection through Amex Travel. The Hotel Collection stay needs at least two nights. The credit follows the booking and processing date, not when you sleep there. Process by June 30 or December 31 at 11:59 PM Central Time for that half. You do not need to finish the stay by that deadline. No separate enrollment. Additional Card prepaid bookings can count toward the same account caps; credits post to the Basic Card Member. Companion Cards on Consumer Platinum may book The Hotel Collection (not Fine Hotels + Resorts) toward the same $600. For a researched weekend stack that pairs this hotel path with the airline fee credit and Uber Cash we use (same calendar weekend, separate charges; not a lived mega-itinerary diary), see Amex Platinum Weekend Trip for Free Stack.
Uber Cash. Up to $15 each month plus a $20 December bump, U.S. only, for up to $200 per year. Add the Platinum Card in Uber. Monthly Cash expires at 11:59 PM Hawaii Standard Time on the last day of the month. Unused does not carry. Treat it as a small habit, not a bank balance. For the Eats-without-a-ride how-to (Cash on + Amex selected at checkout), see the Uber Cash on Uber Eats dig-in.
For the wider calendar problem across cards (what dies on Dec 31 vs what follows an anniversary), use the Dec 31 credits guide and the printable Dec 31 tracker. This page does not absorb that calendar.
What we skip on purpose. CLEAR+ (up to $219 per year) is on the card. Most years we leave CLEAR+ alone. Skipping CLEAR+ is a choice, not a moral failure. We use TSA PreCheck / Global Entry as travelers; the listed fee credit (Global Entry $120 every 4 years, or PreCheck up to $85 for a 5-year membership) stays optional to claim on a given cycle. If your household leans on CLEAR+ every week, your math may differ. Ours does not need CLEAR+ to justify keeping the Card while fee relief applies.
Earn rates matter less on this page than enrollment, but for context: 5X on flights booked directly with airlines or Amex Travel (up to $500,000 per calendar year), 5X on prepaid hotels booked on Amex Travel, and 1X on other purchases. Platinum is not a dining multiplier card; Resy is a statement credit after enrollment, not 5X on restaurants. For badge check, enrollment, and pay-direct steps, see the researched Resy dining credit dig-in.
Cell phone protection (put the wireless bill on the right card)
This benefit is easy to forget because it is not a monthly statement credit. It is protection tied to how you pay the phone bill.
What Platinum lists. Cell phone protection when you pay an eligible wireless bill with the Card: up to $800 per claim, 2 claims per 12 months, $50 deductible. The wireless bill must be paid with the Platinum Card for this benefit to apply. Paying the same bill on another card does not turn Platinum protection on. Read current claim rules, eligible lines, and deductible language before you need a claim.
Contrast with personal Sapphire Reserve. Personal CSR does not list cell phone protection on the product page. Do not copy Business Sapphire Reserve marketing onto the personal card.
Ops line for this house. If you rely on phone protection, put the wireless bill on Platinum or Hilton Aspire. Aspire lists the same family of protection: up to $800 with a $50 deductible. Do not put the wireless bill on personal Reserve and assume coverage exists.
Trip delay and cancel: pay the trip with the right card
Trip protections only help if the prepaid trip sits on the card whose Guide to Benefits you want. That is an ops choice at booking, not a FAQ you read after the delay.
On Platinum (when the round trip or prepaid trip is paid with the Card): Trip delay coverage can apply after a delay of 6 or more hours, up to $500 per trip, with a maximum of 2 claims per 12 months. Trip cancellation and interruption can go up to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per Card per 12 months. Secondary auto rental coverage also sits on Platinum when you rent with the Card. Read the current claim rules before you rely on any of those caps.
On personal Sapphire Reserve (for contrast, not a second comparison): Trip cancellation and interruption can go up to $10,000 per covered traveler and $20,000 per trip. Trip delay can apply after a delay of 6 or more hours or an overnight stay, up to $500 per covered traveler. Chase's Guide to Benefits defines Covered Traveler as you and your Family Member (spouse or domestic partner and children included). Covered Travelers do not need to travel with the cardholder for cancel/interruption benefits to apply. That family structure is why some households lean Reserve for a prepaid family trip even when lounges are a separate debate.
Ops in our house: Decide which card pays the big prepaid trip before you book. Do not split a trip across cards and assume both protections follow. Full side-by-side lounge and insurance verdict still lives on Platinum vs Reserve. Later dedicated trip-insurance pages can go deeper; this section is only the pay-with-the-right-card rule plus the caps above.
Family travel stacking (lounges without rewriting Plat vs Reserve)
If you are choosing which one premium card to lean on for family trips, that comparison still lives on Platinum vs Reserve. Here we only cover how Platinum's Global Lounge Collection behaves when more than one person walks up.
Global Lounge Collection includes Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass (enrollment required), 10 Delta Sky Club visits on eligible Delta flights, and other partners (1,550+ lounges as of January 2026).
Centurion (U.S. Consumer or Business Platinum). No free guests by default. Paid guests: $50 for adults 18+, $30 for ages 2 through 17, under 2 free. Guests must be on the same flight. After $75,000 in eligible spend in a calendar year, you can unlock up to two complimentary guests for the rest of that year, the next calendar year, and through January 31 of the year after that.
Priority Pass. Enrollment required. Up to two complimentary guests at lounges that admit guests. Extra guests pay the Priority Pass guest fee. Some lounges limit or deny guests.
Delta Sky Club (Visits). The 10 Visits cannot cover guest entry. During a Visit, up to two guests or immediate family (spouse or domestic partner and children under 21) can enter at $50 per person ($25 Grab and Go); children under 2 free. Guests need an eligible same-day Delta or WestJet-marketed flight.
Escape Lounges and Plaza Premium. Up to two complimentary guests.
Additional vs Companion (do not mix these up). Additional Platinum Cards get Global Lounge Collection access per the Membership Guide, though many statement credits still sit on the Basic Card Account. Companion Platinum Cards are not eligible for Global Lounge Collection. Additional Platinum Cards are $195 each; Companion Platinum Cards are $0. Companion is not a cheap lounge pass for a second adult. If a second adult needs lounges on this Card, that is an Additional Card conversation, not a Companion Card one.
When we travel as a family, guest math is why we sometimes lean on Reserve lounge rules instead. That debate is already on Platinum vs Reserve. Do not treat this section as a second comparison. Trip delay and cancel caps, and which card should pay the prepaid trip, are covered in the section above.
Fee relief, spouses, and why Platinum is first to cut
Amex applies MLA relief to eligible Card accounts at opening. Enrollment is not required. No action is required from you for MLA relief. Spouses and dependents are listed on Amex's SCRA/MLA FAQ eligibility language for accounts obtained while on active duty.
The FAQ does not literally say the annual fee is "$0." Fee relief is issuer policy on top of the law. Federal rules let issuers leave bona fide, reasonable fees out of the 36% MAPR. That is not the same as a legal order to waive luxury-card fees. Secondary sites that say "$0 out of pocket" are secondary only. We do not treat them as the FAQ.
When relief ends, Amex says you get a notification letter at least 45 days before, then applicable fees resume. Amex also periodically reviews accounts for continued eligibility. Soft path: keep DEERS and DoD data current, read your Card Member Agreement covered-borrower language, and call Amex Military Services at 1-866-391-1460 if something looks wrong. Do not invent a hack.
For spouse primary accounts and DEERS footing, use military spouse cards. For what happens when active duty ends, use leaving active duty. In our house, Platinum is the first card we would cut after separation. That is a household exit rule, not a product ranking of every other card we hold.
Dual-primary / add-on caveat (what official pages do not settle)
Many Platinum statement credits are capped per Card Account, not per plastic. Additional and Companion spend can share the same caps; they are not a second full set. Additional Cards are $195 each; Companion Cards are $0. Companion Cards do not get Global Lounge Collection. Official pages we checked do not settle household "duplicate benefit" bans across two primary Platinum accounts, MLA relief details on Additional or Companion fees, or AU-only MLA treatment. We do not invent bans or waivers there. Soft experience only; confirm with Amex for your accounts.
Traps specific to this card
-
Airline fees before selection. Incidental fees charged before you select the airline are not eligible. Select first, then buy the bag.
-
The Hotel Collection 2-night minimum. A one-night THC booking will not unlock the hotel credit the way people hope. Fine Hotels + Resorts and THC both need the prepaid Amex Travel path; THC adds the two-night rule.
-
Uber Cash does not roll. Month-end is a cliff in Hawaii time. If you "save it for next month," it is gone.
-
Companion is not a lounge card. Companion Platinum at $0 annual fee is useful for some household jobs. It is not Global Lounge Collection access.
-
Enrollment theater. Resy, lululemon, digital entertainment, Oura, Equinox, Priority Pass, and hotel status all say enrollment required on the product story. Spending before that click is how people "lose" a credit that never started. For lululemon enrollment plus the hard wall vs the separate retailer Military/First Responders 15% discount, see the researched lululemon credit dig-in.
-
Treating dual-primary like a loophole. Separate primary accounts each have their own per-Card-Account caps under the wording we have. That is not a published household stacking guarantee, and it is not a reason to ignore pay-in-full discipline.
