Short version: Double Cash is the boring floor of our wallet. No annual fee. Two percent as ThankYou Points when you buy and when you pay. Autopay the full balance. That is the whole strategy. Premium cards get the trips and the credits. This card keeps the rest of the spend honest.
This is how we run the Citi Double Cash we already hold. Not a ranking. Not a reason to open another cash-back card. Wallet map: six-card wallet routine. Series index: Use Every Benefit. Premium contrast stays on Platinum vs Reserve.
PointFam is independent. We are not DoD or any branch. Confirm terms on the issuer site before you rely on a number.
Every card in our house, including Double Cash, is on autopay for the full statement balance. If interest is in the picture, the 2% story is already over. Longer take: What Dave Ramsey Gets Wrong (And What He Gets Right).

Household use
- We hold: Citi Double Cash along with Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Hilton Aspire, Chase Sapphire Preferred, and Delta SkyMiles Reserve. We do not hold Capital One Venture X.
- We use most years: Everyday floor / catch-all cash-back plastic. Autopay full balance.
- We skip: Treating Double Cash like a premium travel card. Revolving a balance "for the points." Building a ThankYou transfer hobby around this product.
- Enroll before spend: Nothing fancy. If you use the portal path, book hotels, car rentals, and attractions through Citi Travel so the extra earn can post.
House rule made plastic
Premium-card internet ignores the boring floor card. We keep Double Cash on purpose.
No annual fee. No authorized-user fee. Earn is 2% on purchases as ThankYou Points: 1% when you buy and 1% as you pay. To earn, pay at least the minimum on time. Balance transfers do not earn.
That second 1% is the miss. Swiping alone is not the full 2%. Our house pays the full statement on autopay, so the second half posts as designed. Pay only the minimum forever and you still "earn," but interest erases the game. See Ramsey and stop.
No hobby. No category calendar. No lounge math. Steady cash-back on spend the premium cards do not win.
When we swipe it
Premium cards own trips, credits, and specific earn maps. Double Cash owns the leftovers.
Researched contrast next to Reserve: supermarket grocery on Sapphire Reserve is base 1X. A 2% floor often beats that habit when nothing else we hold wins the swipe. Online grocery can sit on Preferred when the published Preferred map wins. Full map: six-card wallet.
We do not invent a month-by-month diary. Double Cash is what we reach for when no other held card is clearly better.
Citi Travel portal path (optional 5%)
Most months this card is plain 2%. Citi also lists an optional portal path.
Book hotels, car rentals, and attractions through Citi Travel for an additional 3% (3 points per $1), for 5% total with the usual 1% + 1%. Optional / researched. Use it when portal rate and inventory beat booking elsewhere. Skip it when the non-portal price wins or another held card already owns that trip.
Portal path, then stop. Do not turn this card into a travel encyclopedia.
Family role (simple cash tool)
Simple cash tool in a wallet that already runs premium plastic.
Spouse or partner plastic can sit here without an authorized-user fee on the product page. Useful when someone needs everyday spend plastic without another premium AU cost. Same house rule: autopay full. Deeper path: military spouse cards. Full six: six-card wallet.
Fee-free AU plastic is useful for military households and for any pay-in-full family sharing spend. The job on this page is still the quiet cash floor.
Fee-relief note (short)
No annual fee to relieve.
If you need Citi SCRA paperwork anyway, request during active duty or within one year of release. Military Response Unit: 877-804-1082. Citi's SCRA page does not state annual-fee waivers, MLA fee treatment, or post-separation duration. MLA outcome reports conflict. Treat as possible, not reliable. Get any treatment in writing. Do not overclaim.
Exit steps: leaving active duty. Double Cash often stays either way.
Traps that kill the 2% story
Revolving. Two percent does not beat interest. Autopay full or this stops being a floor card.
Swipe-alone equals 2%. Published earn is 1% buy + 1% pay; pay at least the minimum on time. Balance transfers do not earn.
ThankYou forfeiture on close or convert. Voluntarily close or convert to a non-ThankYou account: use Points within 60 days or lose them. Citi closes for inactivity or converts: 60 days. Citi closes for any other reason: lose Points immediately. Redeem before you prune.
Portal FOMO. The 5% Citi Travel path is optional. Do not force a worse rate to hit a marketing total.
Hobby-card thinking. Not Aspire, Platinum, or Reserve. No resort credit. No lounge math. Keep it short.
