Short version: Keep Delta SkyMiles Reserve when you fly Delta enough that bags, the companion certificate, Sky Club, and miles from flying earn their keep. Pay every statement in full. Do not treat this card as a trophy or as everyday dining plastic. Dining 3X stays on Chase Sapphire Reserve in our house.

This is how we run the Delta SkyMiles Reserve we already hold. It is not a ranking, and it is not a reason to open another co-brand. The Platinum vs Reserve comparison stays on Platinum vs Reserve. For how this card sits next to the rest of the wallet, use the six-card wallet routine. Series index: Use Every Benefit.

PointFam is independent. We are not DoD or any branch. Confirm terms on the issuer site before you rely on a number.

Every card in our house, including Delta Reserve, is on autopay for the full statement balance. Fee relief can change break-even math. It does not change the discipline. If interest is in the picture, most of these benefits stop being the point. Longer take: What Dave Ramsey Gets Wrong (And What He Gets Right).

Household use

  • We hold: Delta SkyMiles Reserve along with Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Hilton Aspire, Chase Sapphire Preferred, and Citi Double Cash. We do not hold Capital One Venture X. Full wallet context: six-card wallet routine.
  • We use most years: Free checked bags on Delta, the companion certificate, Sky Club access that comes with this card, and miles from flying / paying Delta with the card.
  • We skip: Using Delta Reserve as everyday dining plastic (dining stays on CSR 3X Ultimate Rewards). CLEAR+ most years if listed elsewhere in the wallet.
  • Enroll before spend: Link your SkyMiles account to the card so bags, companion certificate delivery, and lounge access route correctly. Confirm companion certificate issuance after renewal before you build a family trip around it. Resy and rideshare statement credits need enrollment on the Amex account if you chase them; Hertz President's Circle needs Hertz Gold+ link + promotion enroll at delta.com/hertz. Those credits are researched optional in this house, not we-use.

Who this card is for (tool, not trophy)

Delta-card blogs treat Reserve like a status badge. We treat it like a tool for Delta-heavy years inside a six-card wallet.

Hold it when Delta is the airline you actually fly. Free bags, the companion certificate, Sky Club when you are on Delta, and 3X miles on purchases made directly with Delta are the jobs. If most of your trips are on other carriers, this plastic is expensive decoration even when fee relief softens the annual fee.

Status pathways and MQD language on the product page are real ($2,500 Headstart; $1 MQD per $10 Boost). They are also easy to overclaim year to year. We use bags, companion, Sky Club, and miles. We do not invent a Medallion diary on this page.

House rule, then stop: autopay the full balance. Swipe map and "when six is too many" live on the six-card wallet. This page goes deeper on Delta Reserve alone.

The annual fee on Delta SkyMiles Reserve is $650. Each Additional Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card is $175. There is no annual fee for Additional Delta SkyMiles Platinum Cards on the account. Those numbers matter when you model the card without fee relief, and when you decide whether an Additional Reserve is worth sharing bag or lounge rules with another adult versus a free Additional Delta Platinum Card on the same account.

Benefits we actually use

Four lived lines are unlocked for this household. Everything else on the Amex product page stays researched or optional until Nate unlocks more we-use.

Companion certificate

We use the companion certificate. That is not the same as remembering every redemption rule when you book a family trip. For cash primary + companion certificate + separate Award Travel family mechanics (researched stack, not a lived full-stack diary), see the dig-in: Delta Companion Certificate Family Hack: Cash, Certificate, and Miles.

Current Amex / Delta terms (re-check the year you book):

  • Eligible experiences: Delta First, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, or Delta Main round-trip (product marketing often lists First, Comfort, Main; terms also name Premium Select). Delta Basic is not eligible.
  • Geography: routings originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands to the U.S., Puerto Rico, USVI, Mexico, the Caribbean, and listed Central America destinations in the current certificate terms.
  • Taxes and fees the companion still pays: product page cites government-imposed taxes and fees of $22 to $250 (itineraries with up to four flight segments). Benefit terms cap that as no more than $80 round-trip domestic and no more than $250 round-trip international. Baggage charges and other restrictions still apply.
  • Delta Vacations: certificate can apply to the eligible flight portion of a package.
  • Booking rules: both passengers same reservation, same class, same time; advance-purchase and stay rules follow the primary fare; travel must be booked and completed by the date on the certificate.
  • Whose account: Basic Card Member receives the certificate after Card Account renewal (renewal month). The Basic Card Member does not have to be one of the two passengers.

Family trap: assuming every traveler in the party flies free. The certificate is a companion benefit with its own fare and tax rules, not a blank family ticket. Exactly two passengers on the companion PNR; extra family on miles is a separate Award booking. Dig-in for dual tax bands, bags only with a traveling Basic Card Member, and the separate-award stack: Delta Companion Certificate Family Hack. Read the current certificate terms the year you renew, not a blog screenshot from two years ago.

Free checked bags

We use free checked bags on Delta. The usual miss is who else on the itinerary gets the benefit.

Current bag terms (re-check before a family trip):

  • First bag free on Delta flights worldwide for the Basic Card Member (not Additional Card Members under current terms), standard size/weight only.
  • Same-reservation companions: first-bag waiver extends to passengers on the same reservation, up to nine waivers total (Basic Card Member + up to eight companions). SkyMiles number for the Basic Card Member must be on the reservation.
  • Second bag free on domestic Delta itineraries (U.S. 48, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, USVI) for the Basic Card Member when the flight is Delta-marketed and Delta-operated.
  • Partners / codeshares: benefit needs Delta-marketed and Delta-operated check-in with Delta. Codeshare flights that only look "Delta" at the airport often fail.
  • Already-free bags (Medallion, military, fare that already includes bags): card waiver does not stack on top.

Family trap: buying Basic to "save," then discovering bag benefits and companion rules do not play the way you expected. Confirm fare experience against current bag and companion terms before you lock the itinerary.

Sky Club (lived use; full stacking rules in next section)

We use Sky Club access that comes with Delta Reserve when we fly Delta. Guest fees and visit caps are where households get surprised. Do not assume free family entry. Stacking against Platinum's limited Delta Sky Club Visits is its own section below because the two Amex products use different rules.

Points (miles) from flying

We earn SkyMiles when we fly Delta and when we put eligible Delta purchases on this card. Product page earn is 3X miles on Delta purchases made directly with Delta (flights and Delta Vacations on the page; Amex earn guide may also cover other spend directly with Delta such as upgrades or in-flight snacks). 1X on all other eligible purchases. That is why the card stays useful on Delta-heavy years and why it is a bad general spend card the rest of the year.

Pay with Miles, TakeOff discounts, and other redemption promos on the product page are researched tools, not a claim that our household runs every promo. Confirm live Delta.com rules when you redeem.

Optional / researched (not we-use)

The live Amex Delta Reserve page also markets MQD Headstart ($2,500 each Qualification Year) and MQD Boost ($1 MQD per $10 eligible purchases), statement credits (Resy up to $20/month / $240 year with enrollment; rideshare up to $10/month / $120 year with enrollment; Delta Stays up to $200 year), Centurion Lounge access when a Delta flight is booked on the card, Global Entry ($120) or TSA PreCheck (up to $85) fee credit every 4 years, Hertz President's Circle enrollment, and other protections.

We use TSA PreCheck / Global Entry as travelers. The Delta Reserve fee credit (Global Entry $120 or TSA PreCheck up to $85 every 4 years) is a listed benefit; claiming that credit on a given renewal stays optional. Resy nights, rideshare months, and Delta Stays bookings are not we-use on this page.

MQD math stays Medium confidence here: useful if you already fly Delta enough to care about Medallion, easy to overclaim if you do not. Teach the idea ($2,500 Headstart; $1 per $10 Boost). Leave status spreadsheet math unless Nate says the household uses it. Do not invent calendar spend to hit Medallion or the $75,000 Sky Club unlock.

Sky Club: Reserve access vs Platinum Visits

Two Amex products can touch Delta Sky Club. Mixing their rules is how people assume free family entry.

Platinum side (verified): Global Lounge Collection includes 10 Delta Sky Club visits on eligible Delta flights, along with Centurion, Priority Pass (enrollment required), and other partners (1,550+ lounges as of January 2026). Those 10 Visits cannot be used for guest entry. During a Visit, up to two guests or immediate family (spouse or domestic partner and children under 21) can enter at $50 per person ($25 Grab and Go); children under 2 free. Guests need an eligible same-day Delta or WestJet-marketed flight. Companion Platinum Cards are not eligible for Global Lounge Collection access.

Reserve side (lived use; visit/guest numbers from official terms): We use Sky Club through Delta Reserve when flying Delta. Basic and Additional Reserve Card Members get 15 Visits each Medallion Year (February 1 through January 31) on same-day Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flights. A Visit covers Club and/or Grab and Go entries for up to 24 hours from first entry. After 15 Visits, pay $50 per person per Visit ($25 Grab and Go). Unlimited access unlocks after $75,000 eligible purchases on the Card Account in a calendar year (then remainder of that Medallion Year through January 31 of the next).

Guests are not free by default. Visits cannot be used for guest entry. During a Visit you may bring up to two guests or immediate family (spouse or domestic partner and children under 21) at $50 per person ($25 Grab and Go); children under 2 free. Basic Card Members also get four One-Time Guest Passes each Medallion Year (Additional Card Members do not); redeem at most two Guest Passes per Visit, with the Basic Card Member present and using the Reserve Card as entry. Main Basic fares: no Club. Capacity denials happen.

Do not copy Platinum Visit guest math onto Reserve beyond the shared paid-guest $50 / $25 Grab and Go amounts, and do not copy Reserve's 15 Visits or Guest Passes onto Platinum's 10 Visits. Default: do not chase the $75,000 unlock just for unlimited Club.

Operating contrast for a family walk-up:

  1. Know which card (or which visit pool) is covering your entry today.
  2. Count heads before you assume kids or a spouse are free.
  3. Same-day eligible flight rules still matter.
  4. Capacity denials happen; membership is not a guarantee of a seat in the club.

Full Platinum vs Reserve lounge comparison (Centurion, Priority Pass, Sky Club Visits) still lives on Platinum vs Reserve. Deeper Platinum lounge enrollment ops live on the Amex Platinum super guide. This section only owns the Delta Sky Club stack confusion for a household that holds both cards.

Earn map: 3X Delta direct, not dining

This is the ops rule that keeps the card from becoming a fee trophy.

  • 3X miles on Delta purchases made directly with Delta (product page: flights and Delta Vacations; earn guide may add other direct-with-Delta spend).
  • 1X on all other eligible purchases.

Dining stays on CSR. Sapphire Reserve dining is 3X Ultimate Rewards, including takeout and eligible delivery. Putting restaurant spend on Delta Reserve to "feed SkyMiles" usually means earning 1X SkyMiles instead of 3X Ultimate Rewards. Different currencies. Different jobs. In this house, dining stays on CSR unless a rare Delta-direct dining charge is actually part of a Delta purchase.

When not to swipe Delta Reserve: gas, groceries, random Amazon, and general dining. Those belong on the wallet card that owns that category or credit. Delta Reserve comes out for Delta flights, Delta Vacations, and other spend made directly with Delta when you want SkyMiles. Floor spend that is not earning a category anywhere else can still land on Citi Double Cash. That division of labor is the six-card wallet, not a second Delta card.

Welcome offers change. Do not hardcode a signup bonus into an evergreen use guide. We already hold the card.

Fee relief: one box, call and confirm

Amex publishes a consumer SCRA/MLA FAQ for American Express accounts in general. MLA relief language on that FAQ applies at account opening with no enrollment required for eligible accounts. The FAQ does not literally say the annual fee is "$0." Fee relief is issuer policy on top of the law. Federal rules let issuers leave bona fide, reasonable fees out of the 36% MAPR. That is not a legal order to waive luxury-card fees.

There is no Delta-specific military page. Whether Delta SkyMiles Reserve gets the same fee outcome as Platinum on your account is call-and-confirm, same posture as Aspire. Soft path only: call Amex military services at 1-866-391-1460 (Mon to Sun 7 am to 11:30 pm ET; collect from outside the U.S.: 1-336-393-1111), ask what applies to your Delta Reserve account, and get the answer in writing. Do not ship secondary "Delta MLA auto $0" claims.

Amex sends a notification letter at least 45 days before relief ends, then resumes applicable fees. Amex also periodically reviews accounts for continued eligibility. Authorized-user / Additional Card fee relief under MLA is not settled on the pages we checked. Do not invent a waiver for the $175 Additional Reserve fee.

For spouse primary accounts and DEERS footing, use military spouse cards. For what happens when active duty ends and Delta travel drops, use leaving active duty.

After the fee returns: model the card against the real $650 annual fee. Keep it only if Delta flying, bags, companion certificate value, Sky Club use, and miles still clear that fee for your household. If Delta is no longer your airline, this is an easy cut. Move or redeem SkyMiles on current Delta rules before you close if you need them.

Traps specific to Delta Reserve

  1. General spend card misuse. 3X is for Delta purchases made directly with Delta. Everything else is 1X. Using this card for dining because "it is premium" costs you CSR's 3X Ultimate Rewards dining.

  2. Assuming free family Sky Club entry. Platinum Visits cannot cover guest entry; guests pay under BP22 rules during a Visit. Reserve guests pay $50 / $25 Grab and Go unless you redeem a One-Time Guest Pass (Basic Card Member; max two per Visit). Count heads. Do not invent a free-spouse rule.

  3. Companion certificate folklore. Lived use does not replace current terms. Fare experience, taxes/fees band, geography, Basic exclusion, and Vacations path all need a fresh terms pass the year you book.

  4. Bag benefit gaps on AUs and partners. First-bag waivers are for the Basic Card Member and same-reservation companions (max nine). Additional Card Members do not get the bag fee-waiver under current terms. Codeshares fail. Confirm scope before a family trip.

  5. Keeping the card after Delta travel drops. Post-separation or after a PCS that ends Delta-heavy years, the $650 fee (or whatever posts after relief ends) needs a hard look. Exit path: leaving active duty.

  6. Chasing Medallion spend unlocks. MQD Headstart / Boost and the $75,000 unlimited Sky Club unlock can tempt calendar spend. Pay-in-full households do not invent spend to hit a threshold. Optional awareness only.

  7. Mixing Platinum Visits with Reserve access. Two pools, two guest rules, one airport. Know which benefit is covering today's entry before you argue with the desk.
