Short version: Pay every statement in full. Reach for Reserve when the spend matches dining or travel. Let the $300 travel credit post itself. Know the trip protections before you prepay a family trip. Count lounge guests before you walk up with kids.
This is how we run the Chase Sapphire Reserve we already hold. It is not a ranking, and it is not a reason to open another card. The full Platinum vs Reserve comparison stays on Platinum vs Reserve. For how this card sits next to the rest of the wallet, use the six-card wallet routine. Series index: Use Every Benefit.
PointFam is independent. We are not DoD or any branch. Confirm terms on the issuer site before you rely on a number.
We hold Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Hilton Aspire, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Delta SkyMiles Reserve, and Citi Double Cash. We do not hold Capital One Venture X. Reserve was the first card we put in a spouse's wallet. Every card, including Reserve, is on autopay for the full statement balance. Fee relief can change break-even math. It does not change the discipline. If interest is in the picture, most of these benefits stop being the point. Longer take: What Dave Ramsey Gets Wrong (And What He Gets Right).

Household use
- We hold: Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Hilton Aspire, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Delta SkyMiles Reserve, and Citi Double Cash. We do not hold Capital One Venture X.
- We use most years: The CSR anniversary travel credit (auto, up to $300).
- We skip: No locked skip list beyond not chasing promos or inventing spend for the $75k unlocks. Dining / StubHub / Lyft / Peloton / Exclusive Tables stay optional until Nate confirms lived use.
- Enroll before spend: Activate Apple TV / Apple Music before the activate-by date if you want them. For researched Apple activation plus The Edit, select hotels, and Chase Travel points-stretch mechanics (we-use still only the $300 travel credit), see CSR Benefit Hacks. Activate StubHub, DashPass / DoorDash, and Peloton only if you already use those partners. Enroll or activate IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite where Chase requires it if you care about that status. Calendar credits to burn before sunset: select Chase Travel hotels through 12/31/26, and The Edit on prepaid 2-night Chase Travel stays.
Why Reserve is still the default plastic
When we are not deliberately using another card's category or credit, Reserve comes out. That habit is what this guide is about.
Dining is 3X. Chase Rewards Program Agreement language counts dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery, at 3 points per dollar. The product page matches: 3X on dining worldwide. We use that. We do not pretend grocery supermarket spend is a bonus category. On Reserve, supermarket grocery is base 1X with all other purchases. If a listicle invents a grocery bonus on personal CSR, ignore it.
Travel earn is real without turning every booking into homework. Purchases through Chase Travel, including The Edit, earn 8X. Flights booked direct and hotels booked direct each earn 4X. Ultimate Rewards cash, gift card, and travel redemptions have a published floor of one cent per point (100 points equals $1); travel promotions can go higher. We do not need a transfer sermon on this page. The earn map is why the card stays in the front pocket.
The $300 travel credit is automatic. Up to $300 each account anniversary year posts as a statement credit on eligible travel-category purchases. You do not enroll. You do not activate. You do not need a special booking site. Airlines, hotels, car rentals, cruises, trains, taxis, parking, tolls, and other travel merchants listed on Chase's education page can count. We actually use this credit. It is one of the few premium-card benefits that does not ask for a second app. For a researched weekend stack that builds on this travel credit with The Edit, select hotels, Chase Travel cars, and (separately) a Delta companion certificate, see CSR Weekend Trip for Free Stack. That dig-in is not a lived Edit + car + hotel diary.
The annual fee on personal Sapphire Reserve is $795. Authorized users are $195 each. Those numbers matter when you model the card without fee relief. They also matter when you decide whether an authorized user is worth lounge guest math (more below).
House rule, then stop: autopay the full balance. Swipe map and "when six is too many" live on the six-card wallet. This page goes deeper on Reserve alone.
Anniversary credit vs calendar credits
Reserve runs two clocks. Mixing them up is how people "lose" a credit that was never on the anniversary calendar.
Anniversary clock (auto). The up-to-$300 travel credit resets each account anniversary year and applies automatically. Watch your open date, not January 1, for this one.
Calendar clock (often needs a booking path or activation). Several other benefits follow the calendar year, half-years, or dated promo windows:
| Credit | Window / shape | Activation or path note |
|---|---|---|
| The Edit | Up to $250 per prepaid booking, up to $500 per calendar year; 2-night minimum; calendar year means Jan 1 through Dec 31 | Prepaid "Pay Now" through Chase Travel; credit must be available at purchase time, not stay date |
| Select Chase Travel hotels | Up to $250 through 12/31/26; 2-night minimum; IHG, Montage, Pendry, Omni, Virgin, Minor, Pan Pacific | Same Pay Now / purchase-date rule; calendar year 2026 window |
| Dining (Exclusive Tables) | Up to $300 per year as $150 Jan-Jun and $150 Jul-Dec on Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables on OpenTable | Calendar halves; different from the 3X dining earn |
| StubHub | Up to $300 per year as $150 per half-year through 12/31/27; activation required | Periods end 11:59 PM ET on the last day of the half |
| Apple TV / Apple Music | Complimentary if activated by 6/22/27 (at least 12 months from activation) | Activation required |
| DashPass / DoorDash | DashPass if activated by 12/31/27; up to $25 per month in promos through 12/31/27 | Monthly promos do not roll |
| Lyft | $10 monthly ($120 per year) through 9/30/27, plus 5X on Lyft | Unused monthly credit forfeited at month end |
| Peloton | $10 monthly ($120 per year) through 12/31/27; activation required | Activation required |
| IHG status | IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite through 12/31/27 | Dated promo; enroll/activate where Chase requires |
| Global Entry / PreCheck / NEXUS | Up to $120 every four years | Statement credit path per Chase terms |
We use the anniversary travel credit. Everything else in the table is researched benefit language, not a claim that our household runs every promo. If a credit needs a lifestyle you do not have, leave it off. For Edit, select hotels, Apple, and Chase Travel portal coding details (researched mechanism dig; we-use still only the travel credit), see CSR Benefit Hacks. For a researched weekend hotel path (The Edit + select hotels + leftover travel credit, plus separate Chase Travel cars and Delta companion), see CSR Weekend Trip for Free Stack. For the wider Dec 31 vs anniversary problem across cards, use the credits expiring Dec 31 guide and the printable Dec 31 tracker. This page does not absorb that calendar.
Trip protections for prepaid family trips
This is the other reason Reserve stays in the wallet when we prepay family travel. Dining earn and lounge math are habits. Protections matter when a trip goes sideways.
Covered Traveler includes family. Chase's Trip Cancellation / Interruption Guide to Benefits defines Covered Traveler as you and your Family Member. Family Member includes spouse or domestic partner, and sons and daughters (including adopted children and stepchildren), plus other listed relatives. Covered Travelers do not need to travel with the cardholder for benefits to apply. That family framing is why this section belongs on a household guide.
Trip cancellation and interruption. Up to $10,000 per covered traveler and $20,000 per trip when the trip is paid with the card and other Guide terms are met.
Trip delay. Delay of 6+ hours or an overnight stay, up to $500 per covered traveler.
Emergency evacuation. Up to $100,000 for a trip 100+ miles from home, per product terms.
Primary rental car coverage. Up to $75,000 primary coverage (secondary inside the U.S. for New York residents). Primary vs secondary is a real household difference when you decline the desk CDW and something hits the car.
Quick contrast, not a second comparison: Amex Platinum markets Premium Global Assist Hotline for emergency assistance and coordination more than 100 miles from home. Emergency medical transportation assistance may be provided at no cost only if approved and coordinated by that hotline; Card Members may still owe third-party provider costs. That is assistance language, not the same published $100,000 evacuation insurance line CSR shows. Full side-by-side insurance debate stays on Platinum vs Reserve and later dedicated coverage pieces. This section is not the whole trip-insurance article.
Read the current Guide to Benefits before you rely on a claim. Caps, exclusions, and notice windows live there. We are not inventing a claim story on this page.
Lounge with kids (guest math that actually works)
Priority Pass Select (1,300+) and Chase Sapphire Lounges come with the card, with up to two guests. Primary cardmembers and authorized users get Priority Pass Select membership automatically activated.
The rule that matters with kids: primary cardmembers and authorized users are allowed a maximum of two accompanying guests each. Additional guests are charged $27 per guest, per visit on your card. Access can be denied if the lounge is at capacity. Membership is not transferable; the member must be present.
Family-of-four math (one primary only): cardholder + two free guests = three people. The fourth person is a $27 paid guest unless that person is an authorized user with their own membership. An authorized user is $195 per year on personal CSR. Whether that fee is worth avoiding repeated $27 guest charges depends on how often you lounge together. We do not invent a break-even spreadsheet here. Count heads before you walk up.
Full Platinum vs Reserve lounge comparison (Centurion guest fees, Priority Pass on both sides, Sky Club Visits) still lives on Platinum vs Reserve. A future lounges-with-kids brief can go deeper. This section only owns Reserve's AU-and-guest arithmetic.
Fee relief and the spouse path
Reserve was the first spouse card in our house. That is lived path language, not a product pitch. For DEERS footing, covered-borrower checks, and spouse primary accounts across issuers, use military spouse cards. For what happens when active duty ends, use leaving active duty.
Chase MLA fee waiver (based on reports, not an official issuer page)
Secondary sites report that Chase waives annual fees under MLA on cards opened after Sept 20, 2017. No official Chase page we checked states that waiver. Chase's SCRA page lists interest-rate reduction, foreclosure and repossession protection, early auto lease termination, and Chase Military Services at 1-877-469-0110 (Mon to Fri 8 AM to 9 PM ET; international 1-318-340-3308). It does not publish an MLA annual-fee waiver. Fee relief is issuer policy on top of the law, not a legal order to zero out luxury-card fees. Soft path only: call Chase Military Services, ask what applies to your account, and get the answer in writing. Do not treat secondary blogs as Chase policy.
Authorized-user fee relief under MLA is not settled on the pages we checked. Do not invent a waiver for the $195 AU fee. Confirm with Chase for your accounts.
Traps and exit specific to Reserve
-
Promo end dates are real cliffs. Select hotels credit runs through 12/31/26. StubHub, DashPass/DoorDash promos, Peloton, and IHG status language run through 12/31/27 on the product page we checked. Lyft credit language runs through 9/30/27. Apple activation window cites 6/22/27. Monthly pieces (Lyft, DoorDash promos) do not roll unused amounts. Put end dates on a calendar. Do not assume "premium card forever" means "this promo forever."
-
$75k unlocks are optional, not a spend target. Spending $75,000 per calendar year unlocks Hyatt Explorist, IHG Diamond Elite, Southwest A-List, a $250 The Shops at Chase credit, and a $500 Southwest Chase Travel credit. That is a published unlock list. It is not a reason to invent household spend to chase status. Pay-in-full households treat it as optional.
-
Personal CSR has no cell phone protection. The personal product page lists purchase protection, return protection, extended warranty, and travel protections. It does not list cell phone protection. Do not copy Business Sapphire Reserve marketing onto the personal card. If you rely on phone protection, put the eligible wireless bill on Amex Platinum or Hilton Aspire. Platinum lists up to $800 per claim, 2 claims per 12 months, $50 deductible. Aspire lists up to $800 with a $50 deductible. Paying the phone bill on personal Reserve does not create that benefit. Confirm claim rules on the issuer before you rely on it.
-
Grocery is still 1X. Dining takeout can be 3X. The supermarket aisle is not. Wrong category expectations create fake "this card is broken" stories.
-
Product-change destinations are call-and-confirm. Chase discusses product changes in general terms (align the card with spending, contact the issuer, eligibility varies, soft inquiry often used, account age and payment history may be preserved, rewards and benefits may change). Chase does not publish a public list of Sapphire Reserve destinations such as Freedom Unlimited, Flex, or Preferred. If you need a lower-fee Chase home for the account later, call and confirm what you qualify for before you plan on a specific product.
-
Welcome offers change. Do not hardcode a signup bonus into an evergreen use guide. Check the live offer if you are comparing a new account somewhere else. We already hold the card.
Exit note. When fee relief ends or the household no longer uses travel credit, protections, and lounges enough to care, revisit the card against Platinum vs Reserve and the exit steps on leaving active duty. Move Ultimate Rewards before you close if you need them; Chase education language says points do not expire while the account is open, and closing without another open Ultimate Rewards card can forfeit unused points (ordinary close may allow a short use window per program agreement). Confirm current Chase language before you act.
