How we make money: This page has no affiliate, referral, or paid links. We earn nothing if you open, keep, or cancel any card mentioned here. If we ever add a paid link, it will be labeled "Paid link" right next to it, and this box will change. Card terms change often, so check the issuer's site before you book or spend.

Independent site: PointFam is an independent site for families who use cards and points for travel. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Defense or any branch of the U.S. military. None of these cards is an "official" military card. Views are the author's own.

Not advice: Nothing on this page is legal, tax, or financial advice. Credit terms, enrollment rules, and eligibility windows are set by the issuer and can change without notice. Check your own Amex account, Amex Travel booking screens, Uber account, and the current benefit language before you rely on a number below.

Last verified: October 6, 2026. Amounts and stack rules below follow American Express Platinum product terms, the Amex hotel-credit how-to / Travel FAQ, Centurion Lounge access language, and (for mechanism depth) our airline fee and Uber Cash dig-ins we cross-checked that day, plus verified household notes.

Short version: A "free" Platinum weekend is almost never zero after hotel taxes and property fees, airfare plus ticket taxes (the fee credit does not buy tickets), Uber spend beyond monthly Cash, and optional lounge guest fees. On the hotel side, prepaid Pay Now Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) or The Hotel Collection (THC) via Amex Travel can chase up to $300 per semi-annual half. Airline fee credit offsets incidentals on one selected airline only. Uber Cash covers $15 most months ($35 in December) for rides or Eats. Same calendar weekend is fine. One confirmation number for hotel + tickets + Uber is not.

We use the Amex Platinum hotel credit, airline fee credit, and Uber Cash. This page does not claim a lived weekend that combined prepaid FHR/THC + airline fee incidentals + Uber Cash on one short trip. That stays open: Until then, the stack below is researched mechanics: Amex pages say / dig-ins say / holders can.

Parent card checklist: Amex Platinum super guide. Series index: Use Every Benefit. Mechanism dig-ins (depth lives there, not here): airline fee credit and Uber Cash via Uber Eats. Q4 timing: credits expiring Dec 31 and the Dec 31 tracker. Wallet context: six-card wallet routine and Platinum vs Reserve. Chase-side twin (different issuer; keep stacks separate): CSR weekend trip for free stack.

On this page

What "free" actually means (read this first)

A $0 weekend is almost never real. Credits can erase large chunks of prepaid FHR/THC, selected-airline bags or refreshments, and airport Uber. None of that erases every tax, ticket, tip, guest fee, or charge billed by the property.

Cost that usually survives Why
Airline tickets (base + government taxes/fees) Airline fee credit covers incidentals on one selected airline only. Tickets, upgrades, and award tickets are not incidental.
Hotel taxes / resort / property fees / charges by the property Hotel credit terms: eligible bookings do not include "property fees or other similar fees, or any charges by a property to you." How the tax line on a prepaid Amex Travel Pay Now charge is treated (room-rate-only vs tax-inclusive) is not confirmed on the issuer's site; Amex does not publish a clear rule either way.
Uber beyond monthly Cash $15/mo ($35 in December) evaporates month-end. Tip/tax treatment of Cash spend is not confirmed on the issuer's site per the Uber dig-in. The Card pays the difference.
Lounge guest fees for family Centurion U.S. Consumer/Business Plat: no free guests by default; $50 ages 18+, $30 ages 2-17, under 2 free. Priority Pass / Escape / Plaza Premium / Sky Club guest rules differ. Optional cost honesty, not a we-use lounge story.
Wi-Fi / alliance-partner fees billed wrong Wireless internet and fees not charged by the selected airline usually fail.
Credits that need enrollment you skipped Airline fee needs select first. Hotel does not. Uber needs Card added in Uber. Resy and similar lifestyle credits are researched-only here; do not invent them into the weekend stack.

This stack can make a weekend cheap. It does not make it free, pay the airfare, or put hotel, tickets, Uber, and lounge guests on one confirmation.

Plat pieces for a short trip (hotel + airline fee + Uber)

These are the Amex-side building blocks. Amounts and windows come from the Platinum product page, hotel how-to / Travel FAQ, and the locked dig-ins.

Hotel credit: $300 / $300 halves (locked we-use)

  • Up to $600 per calendar year: $300 January through June + $300 July through December.
  • Eligible: prepaid (Pay Now) Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) or The Hotel Collection (THC) booked through American Express Travel (amextravel.com, Amex Travel App, Amex App, or phone).
  • THC: minimum two consecutive nights.
  • FHR: how-to / FAQ do not state a 2-night minimum for the statement credit itself. FHR program perks are marketed around stays separately; that is not a credit-side night floor. A true 1-night FHR prepaid can still chase the hotel credit; THC cannot.
  • No enrollment.
  • Timing: booking/processing date controls the half, not stay completion. Process by June 30 / December 31 11:59 PM Central for that half; "you do not need to complete your travel by that date."
  • Additional Card purchases count toward account caps; credits post to Basic. Companion may book THC not FHR on Consumer Platinum.
  • Pay with Points: Amex how-to / FAQ say eligible prepaid FHR/THC including Pay with Points can still earn hotel statement credits via Amex Travel.
  • Statement credit appearance: often "AMEX FINE HOTELS RES" or "AMEX HOTEL COLLECTN" with "Amex HotelCredit"; allow up to 90 days (typically sooner) per terms.
  • Not eligible: Pay Later / Pay at Hotel; non-FHR/THC Amex Travel hotels; property fees / charges by the property (terms).

On-property FHR/THC benefits are separate from the $300 statement credit (breakfast, property credit, upgrade / late checkout when available; THC list we checked has no daily breakfast). Subject to change; vary by property. Do not treat property credits as cash for taxes.

We use this hotel credit. That is one of three first-person claims on this page (hotel, airline fee, Uber Cash). The combined weekend itinerary stays researched.

Airline fee credit: $200 after select (locked we-use; stub dig-in)

Full mechanics live in How to Use the Amex Platinum Airline Fee Credit. This section only restates what you need for stack honesty.

  1. Up to $200 calendar year; one selected qualifying airline; select before spend. Fees before selection never credit.
  2. Incidentals only (bags, refreshments, change fees, lounge day-passes, and other product-page examples). Not tickets, upgrades, award tickets, gift cards, or duty-free.
  3. Must be a separate charge from the ticket. Wi-Fi and alliance-partner fees usually fail.
  4. Credits often post in 6 to 8 weeks per terms; call if missing after 8.

Stack architecture: Buy tickets as usual. Fee credit only offsets eligible incidentals after airline select. It does not pay airfare.

We use this airline fee credit. Which airline we selected and which incidentals we burn stay open; see the airline fee dig-in for mechanics.

Uber Cash: monthly + December (locked we-use; stub dig-in)

Full mechanics live in How to Use Amex Platinum Uber Cash on Uber Eats. Short restatement for stack honesty:

  1. $15 per month + $20 December ($35 that month); $200/year math.
  2. Eats OK without a ride. Airport rides also fine where Uber permits Cash.
  3. Month-end evaporate 11:59 PM Hawaii Standard Time last day of month; unused does not carry.
  4. Add the Card directly in Uber (not Apple Pay for receiving the Benefit).
  5. Keep the Uber One $120 statement credit separate. That is researched-only for the household and not part of this weekend stack.

We use Uber Cash. Whether a given weekend burns rides, Eats, or both stays researched-only for now; see the Uber Cash dig-in.

Lounges: optional family cost honesty (researched; not a we-use lounge story)

Treat lounges as an optional weekend cost, not a we-always-lounge story.

Network Guest math (U.S. Consumer Plat highlight)
Centurion Lounge Card Member free with Card + same-day boarding pass + ID. Guests: $50 (18+), $30 (2-17), under 2 free; same flight. Unlock up to 2 complimentary guests after $75,000 eligible spend calendar year (then remainder + next year + through Jan 31 following).
Priority Pass (enrollment) Up to 2 complimentary guests at lounges that admit guests; some lounges limit or deny guests.
Delta Sky Club (10 Visits on eligible Delta) Visits cannot cover guest entry; during a Visit, up to 2 guests or immediate family at $50 / $25 Grab and Go; under 2 free.
Escape / Plaza Premium Up to 2 complimentary guests.

Companion Platinum Cards are not eligible for the Global Lounge Collection. Companion plastic is not a lounge guest pass.

EXAMPLE family math only: two adults + two kids ages 2-17 at Centurion = Card Member free + $50 + $30 + $30 = $110 guest fees before any spend unlock. Not a household claim.

Stacking matrix (realistic short-trip shapes)

Keep the shapes separate. Do not invent one itinerary that burns every credit. Same calendar weekend with separate charges is fine. One mega-confirmation that also invents Resy, CLEAR, and free lounge guests is not.

A. What can combine on the same calendar weekend

Piece Booking / spend channel Same weekend? Shares one confirmation?
Prepaid FHR or THC hotel Amex Travel Pay Now Yes (core) Hotel confirmation only
Selected-airline bags / refreshments Airline (after select) Yes if flying that airline Separate from hotel
Uber Cash rides or Eats Uber / Uber Eats app Yes App orders / rides
Lounge visit Airport with boarding pass Optional N/A
Flight tickets Airline / Amex Travel / points Often yes Not paid by airline fee credit
Resy / lululemon / digital entertainment Separate lifestyle credits Possible same weekend Researched-only; do not force into stack

B. Realistic matrix rows (EXAMPLE shapes)

Shape Hotel Airline fee Uber Cash Lounges What "cheap" means What still costs money
1. Drive / train weekend Burn one $300 half on FHR (1+ nights) or THC (2+ nights) Skip or save for later flights $15 rides/Eats at destination Skip Hotel prepaid offset up to $300 + FHR/THC on-property perks Hotel taxes/property fees; Uber over Cash; food beyond property credit
2. Fly selected airline + hotel Same as row 1 Bags / seats (if incidental) / refreshments on selected airline up to remaining $200 year balance Airport Uber to/from Optional Centurion/PP; guest fees if family Hotel offset + incidental offset + $15 Uber Tickets + taxes; Wi-Fi risk; guest lounge fees; Uber over Cash
3. Fly different airline Same hotel half Fee credit does not apply (wrong airline) Uber Cash Optional Hotel + Uber only All flight costs; do not invent fee-credit workaround
4. Hotel already burned this half $0 hotel credit left until next half (or next year) Incidentals if selected airline Uber Cash Optional Incidentals + Uber only Full hotel; tickets
5. December micro-stack Jul-Dec hotel half if still open Year airline fee if still open $35 Uber Cash that month (still evaporates Dec 31 HST) Optional Link Credits Dec 31 Same tax/fee honesty; do not claim Dec is a free mega-weekend

None of these rows claims hotel + airline fee + Uber + free lounge guests + Resy + CLEAR all on one confirmation as the "PointFam weekend."

C. Conflicts / traps (keep these honest)

  1. Semi-annual hotel vs calendar airline vs monthly Uber: Different clocks. Burning hotel January through June does not reset airline fee or Uber.
  2. THC 2-night floor: A true Saturday-only crash fails THC; FHR may still work for 1 night.
  3. Pay Later / pay at hotel: Fails hotel credit.
  4. Airline select-after-spend: Pre-selection fees never credit.
  5. Wrong airline / partner billing / Wi-Fi: Fee credit fails.
  6. Uber Cash evaporate: Leaving $15 unused Sunday night of a month-end weekend wastes it.
  7. Assuming property fees are in the $300: Terms exclude property fees / charges by property. Prepaid tax-line treatment stays not confirmed on the issuer's site.
  8. Merging Edit with FHR: The CSR twin uses Chase Travel / The Edit; this dig-in uses Amex Travel FHR/THC. Soft-link only; never say Edit credit applies to Amex Travel or vice versa.
  9. Companion Card lounge: Companion not GLC-eligible.
  10. Dual-primary double hotel on one stay: Out of scope.
  11. MLA / annual fee math as "free weekend": Out of scope beyond soft independence.

Stacking calendar (plan the clocks)

Benefit Window Weekend planning note
Hotel $300 Jan 1-Jun 30 process CT; Jul 1-Dec 31 process CT Book Pay Now in the half you want to burn; stay can be later. Link Dec 31 for Jul-Dec half.
Airline fee $200 Calendar year after airline selected Select first; change once in January if needed. Unused Dec 31 = lose (link Credits Dec 31).
Uber Cash $15 / Dec $35 Monthly; evaporates last day HST Burn on trip month's rides/Eats before month-end. December bump still evaporates Dec 31 HST.
Centurion guest unlock After $75k eligible spend calendar year Rarely relevant to a single weekend.
CLEAR+ Skip framing here (separate from GE/PreCheck we-use as travelers) Do not bundle into weekend stack.

Dec 31: credits expiring Dec 31 and the Dec 31 tracker for hotel Jul-Dec half + airline fee year-end + December Uber.

Worked EXAMPLE structure (placeholders only)

Label clearly: EXAMPLE. The round numbers below are structure only, not live quotes or verified rates.

Scenario shape (fictional round numbers):

  1. Hotel (Amex Travel FHR or THC Pay Now): EXAMPLE prepaid total $H. Apply up to $300 from the open semi-annual half. Out-of-pocket hotel ≈ $H - applied credit (+ any tax/fee / property lines credits do not cover). Mark unknown prepaid tax-line treatment as not confirmed on the issuer's site. Property fees / charges by the property stay outside eligibility framing.

  2. Flight tickets: EXAMPLE fare $F (not covered by airline fee credit).

  3. Airline incidentals (selected airline only): EXAMPLE bags/refreshments $I, credited up to remaining fee-credit balance (max $200/year).

  4. Uber: EXAMPLE rides/Eats $U; up to $15 (or $35 in December) from Cash; Card pays remainder. Tip/tax treatment of Cash spend stays not confirmed on the issuer's site.

  5. Lounge guests (optional): EXAMPLE Centurion guest fees $G from BP22 math.

  6. Total EXAMPLE out-of-pocket: hotel remainder + $F + uncredited incidentals + Uber remainder + $G + other food. Do not headline the EXAMPLE as a "$0 weekend."

Optional later: another $300 hotel booking in the other semi-annual window (separate booking).

Weekend booking path

  1. Check Benefits UI: hotel half balance, airline selected + fee-credit remaining, Uber Cash balance in Uber app.
  2. Search Amex Travel for FHR or THC; confirm Pay Now; for THC confirm 2+ consecutive nights; read cancel policy.
  3. Book hotel on Platinum (cash or Pay with Points if chasing credit per FAQ).
  4. If flying: confirm selected airline matches; buy tickets knowing fee credit will not cover them; buy incidentals as separate charges after selection.
  5. Add/keep Platinum in Uber Wallet; toggle Uber Cash on for airport rides or Eats.
  6. Optional: enroll Priority Pass before trip if using PP; check Centurion/Escape guest fees before bringing family.
  7. Track hotel credit (up to 90 days) and airline fee credits (often 6 to 8 weeks).
  8. At hotel: confirm FHR/THC on-property benefits and charge eligible items to the room when required for the property credit.

CSR weekend twin (different issuers)

Soft-link CSR weekend trip for free stack. Short contrast only. Chase The Edit and Amex FHR/THC stay on separate issuer paths; do not merge them.

Amex Platinum (this dig-in) Chase Sapphire Reserve (twin)
Hotel path FHR / THC prepaid via Amex Travel; $300/$300 halves The Edit + select hotels via Chase Travel; calendar Edit + 2026 select
Flexible travel credit No general $300 travel-category credit like CSR $300 anniversary travel credit (cars/hotels/etc.)
Flight side Airline fee credit (incidentals) Often paired with Delta companion dig-in (separate issuer)
Rides Uber Cash deposit Lyft monthly (researched); cars via Chase Travel 8X
Do not merge Never apply Edit credit to Amex Travel FHR Never apply Amex hotel credit to Chase Edit

Sibling soft-link only. CSR dig-in mechanics stay on the Chase page.

Gotchas checklist

  1. Calling it free when taxes/fees/tickets remain.
  2. THC 1-night stay.
  3. Pay Later / pay at hotel.
  4. Airline fees before selection.
  5. Expecting tickets or Wi-Fi to credit.
  6. Burning Uber Cash after month-end HST.
  7. Assuming property fees are inside the $300.
  8. Inventing one PNR for hotel + flights + Uber.
  9. Merging Chase Edit with Amex FHR.
  10. Companion Card as lounge guest pass.
  11. Stuffing Resy/lululemon/CLEAR into the "weekend stack" as we-use.
  12. Treating EXAMPLE dollars as live quotes.
  13. Dual-primary double hotel inventing.
  14. Assuming prepaid Amex Travel tax lines are guaranteed covered (or guaranteed excluded).
  15. Treating December as a free mega-weekend.

Where this sits in the wallet / series

This dig-in owns the weekend multi-benefit stack under the Amex Platinum super guide. The airline fee dig-in and Uber Cash dig-in own mechanism depth. The CSR weekend twin is the Chase parallel. Platinum vs Reserve helps pick which premium card to lean on.

Series index: Use Every Benefit. Calendar: credits expiring Dec 31 and the Dec 31 tracker. Wallet: six-card wallet routine.

FAQ

Can hotel + airline fee + Uber Cash all land on the same calendar weekend?
Yes as separate charges: Amex Travel hotel confirmation, airline ticket/incidentals, and Uber app. Same weekend is fine. One confirmation for everything is not.

Does the airline fee credit pay the weekend airfare?
No. Incidentals only after you select one qualifying airline. Tickets and upgrades do not count.

Can a 1-night FHR stay chase the hotel credit?
How-to / FAQ state the 2-night minimum for THC, not for FHR statement-credit eligibility. A true 1-night FHR prepaid can still chase the credit; THC needs two consecutive nights.

Do property fees count toward the $300 hotel credit?
Terms say eligible bookings do not include property fees or other similar fees, or any charges by a property to you. Treat resort / property fees as outside the statement-credit framing.

Are taxes on the prepaid Amex Travel charge covered?
Not confirmed on the issuer's site. Amex does not spell room-rate-only vs tax-inclusive for the Pay Now charge. Do not invent either direction.

Does Pay with Points kill the hotel credit?
Amex how-to / FAQ say eligible prepaid FHR/THC including Pay with Points can still earn hotel statement credits.

Can a Companion Platinum Card get the family into Centurion for free?
No. Companion Platinum Cards are not eligible for the Global Lounge Collection.

Is this the same as the CSR Edit weekend stack?
No. Different issuer, different hotel path. Soft-link the CSR weekend twin; never merge Edit with FHR.
