How we make money: This page has no affiliate, referral, or paid links. We earn nothing if you open, keep, or cancel any card mentioned here. If we ever add a paid link, it will be labeled "Paid link" right next to it, and this box will change. Card terms change often, so check the issuer's site before you book or spend.
Independent site: PointFam is an independent site for families who use cards and points for travel. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Defense or any branch of the U.S. military. None of these cards is an "official" military card. Views are the author's own.
Not advice: Nothing on this page is legal, tax, or financial advice. Credit terms, enrollment rules, and eligibility windows are set by the issuer and can change without notice. Check your own Amex account and the current benefit terms before you rely on a number below.
Last verified: October 6, 2026. Amounts and rules below follow American Express Platinum product and benefit terms we checked that day, plus verified household notes.
Short version: Select your one qualifying airline before you buy bags, drinks, or other incidentals. Charge only fees billed by that airline as separate non-ticket charges. In-flight refreshments are an official example. In-flight Wi-Fi usually is not. Allow 6 to 8 weeks for the statement credit; call if it is missing after 8 weeks.
We use the Amex Platinum airline fee credit. Most years we also use the Platinum hotel credit and Uber Cash on purpose. This page does not name which airline is selected this year or which incidental types we burned. Those stay open until Nate fills them: Until then, the steps below follow Amex's primary language: what holders can do, what terms say, and what to select before you spend.

The numbers (amount, one airline, per Card Account)
On U.S. Consumer Platinum, the airline fee benefit is up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year for incidental fees charged by your one selected qualifying airline. That is a calendar year (January through December), not an account anniversary year.
The cap is per Card Account. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members on the enrolled Card Account are eligible, but total statement credits will not exceed $200 per calendar year per Card Account. An Additional Card does not create a second $200.
Unused capacity: plan as use-it-or-lose within the calendar year. Amex Credit Intel marketing says the credit does not roll over and resets with the January window. Benefit terms emphasize the per-calendar-year cap without a separate "no rollover" slogan in the Airline Fee block we checked. Cite Credit Intel if you use "doesn't roll over" wording; otherwise stick to calendar-year planning. For Dec 31 timing across cards, see credits expiring Dec 31 and the Dec 31 tracker.
Select airline first (the trap)
This is the lead gotcha. Official benefit terms say: "Incidental airline fees charged prior to selection of a qualifying airline are not eligible for statement credits."
Enrollment is required. You select one qualifying airline in the Benefits section on americanexpress.com (or the Amex app), or by calling the number on the Card. Only the Basic Card Member or Authorized Account Manager(s) can select.
If you have not chosen yet, you may select at any time. If you have already selected, you may change one time each year in January (online or by phone). If you do not change in January, you stay with the current airline.
Takeaway: Buying bags, drinks, or Wi-Fi before the selection posts wastes that spend for this credit. Select first, confirm the selection is done, then charge incidentals.
What counts as incidental (official examples)
Product page Benefit Details lists incidental fees such as: checked bags, in-flight refreshments, flight-change fees, overweight / oversize baggage fees, airport lounge day-passes, pet-kennel fees, and phone reservation fees charged by the airline to the Platinum account. Prefer this list when you need a hard official example set.
Travel FAQ short answer: incidental fees such as checked bags and in-flight refreshments.
Amex Credit Intel (marketing page published December 15, 2025; fetched October 6, 2026) expands "typically considered incidental" examples: checked luggage; oversized or overweight baggage; flight change fees; seat selection or reassignment excluding seat upgrades; in-flight food and beverage; in-flight entertainment excluding wireless internet; phone booking fees; annual airline club membership fees; airport lounge day pass fees. Treat those extras as Amex marketing examples, not as a substitute for product-page / benefit-terms coverage. Seat selection and annual club membership are not in the product-page "such as" list we checked.
Must be a separate charge: "Incidental airline fees must be separate charges from airline ticket charges." Bundling a bag into one prepaid ticket charge is the risk. There is no official universal "prepaid never works / gate always works" rule. Follow separate charge by the selected airline plus correct merchant coding.
What is NOT incidental (official)
From Travel FAQ terms / benefit terms:
- Airline tickets
- Upgrades
- Mileage points purchases
- Mileage points transfer fees
- Gift cards
- Duty free purchases
- Award tickets
- Fees not charged by the Card Member's selected airline (example language: "wireless internet and fees incurred with airline alliance partners")
The airline must also submit the charge under the appropriate merchant / industry / service identifier. Amex relies on that airline transaction data.
Deep dive paths readers ask about
| Path | What to know |
|---|---|
| In-flight refreshments / paid drinks / food | Explicit on the product page ("in-flight refreshments") and Travel FAQ. Safe as a primary eligible example when charged by the selected airline as a separate incidental. "Free drinks" as a lounge amenity is not this credit. |
| In-flight Wi-Fi / wireless internet | Not on the product-page incidental examples. Terms use "wireless internet" as an example of fees not charged by the selected airline. Credit Intel entertainment fees exclude wireless internet. Default: Wi-Fi usually fails. Do not promise Wi-Fi credits. Community reports that some airlines bill Wi-Fi under their own merchant remain based on reports, not an official issuer page. |
| Checked bags / overweight / oversize | Explicit on the product page and Credit Intel. Core path; still must be selected airline + separate charge. |
| Flight change fees | Explicit on the product page. Eligible when charged by the selected airline as an incidental (not as part of a new ticket that codes as airfare). |
| Airport lounge day passes | Explicit on the product page. Day pass charged by the selected airline's lounge product. Do not conflate with Centurion Lounges or Priority Pass (different benefits). |
| Pet kennel fees | Explicit on the product page; missing from the Credit Intel "typically" list we fetched. Prefer the product page. |
| Phone reservation fees | Explicit on the product page; Credit Intel lists phone booking fees as marketing. Eligible when charged by the selected airline. |
| Seat selection | Credit Intel marketing (excluding seat upgrades); not in the product-page "such as" list. OK as Amex marketing if labeled. Upgrades remain excluded in terms. |
| Partner / alliance / codeshare fees | Fees with airline alliance partners do not qualify when not charged by the selected airline. Wrong-carrier bag fee on a partner-operated segment is a classic miss. |
Enrollment / selection steps (public)
- Log into americanexpress.com or the Amex app.
- Select one qualifying airline for the Airline Fee Credit from the Benefits section, or call the number on the Card. Only the Basic Card Member or Authorized Account Manager can select.
- Public enroll deep link cited in terms (login wall expected):
https://global.americanexpress.com/card-benefits/enroll/airline-fee-credit/platinum. Treat it as an entry URL, not a guarantee of logged-out content. - Confirm selection completed before charging incidentals.
- Pay eligible incidentals with a Card on the enrolled Card Account (Basic or Additional plastic).
- Allow 6 to 8 weeks for the statement credit per benefit terms. Call American Express if it has not posted after 8 weeks. Travel FAQ marketing short copy also says typically 2 to 4 weeks / check after 4 weeks. Prefer the terms window; if you cite the FAQ timing, label it as FAQ marketing vs terms.
Exact in-account Benefits tile click paths can differ by app version. Public pages confirm selection through Benefits or by phone. Treat blog screenshots of the Benefits UI as based on reports, not an official issuer page, if you need a click-by-click map.
Qualifying airlines (subject to change)
Prefer the benefit-terms list we fetched October 6/7, 2026: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Lists are subject to change.
Documented mismatch: Travel FAQ Terms the same night still listed those six plus Hawaiian Airlines and Spirit Airlines. Do not treat the FAQ Hawaiian + Spirit list as a complete/current selectable set. Prefer the benefit-terms six for what we assert as currently named carriers, and confirm what your own selection UI shows when you enroll. Secondary write-ups about Hawaiian after the Alaska merger or Spirit after shutdown are based on reports, not an official issuer page, and are not official Amex removal notices in this pass.
Common gotchas (sourced only)
| Gotcha | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fees charged before airline selection | Terms: prior to selection not eligible. Select first, then spend. |
| Wrong airline selected (fly one carrier, selected another) | Credit applies only to charges from the selected airline. |
| Fee charged by a partner / alliance carrier, not the selected airline | Fees not charged by the selected airline (alliance partners example) do not qualify. |
| Ticket + incidental bundled as one ticket charge | Incidentals must be separate charges from airline ticket charges. |
| Wi-Fi billed by a third party / wireless internet | Terms example + Credit Intel exclude wireless internet. Default: usually fails. Do not promise. |
| Upgrades, award tickets, gift cards, duty-free, mileage buys | Explicit non-incidentals. |
| Additional Card spend toward the same $200 | Eligible toward the per Card Account cap, not a second $200. |
| Statement credit slow or missing | Allow 6 to 8 weeks; call after 8 weeks; airline coding required. |
| Selecting mid-year | Allowed if none selected yet; prior spend still dead. January is the change window if already selected. |
| Changing airline outside January | Once selected, change one time each year in January only. |
| Dual-primary: two Basic Card Accounts | Each Card Account has its own $200 under per-Card-Account wording. Official pages do not name "household." |
| Conflating with CSR $300 travel credit | Different product; see next section. |
| Conflating lounge day pass with Centurion / Priority Pass | Different benefits; day pass is an airline incidental path only when the selected airline charges it. |
Not the same as CSR $300 travel credit (keep short)
| Amex Platinum airline fee | CSR travel credit | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount / cadence | Up to $200/calendar year | Up to $300/account anniversary year |
| What | Incidentals on one selected airline | Broad travel category purchases (airlines, hotels, transit, and more per Chase) |
| Enrollment | Required (select airline) | Automatic; no activation |
| Household on PointFam | Locked we-use airline fee | Locked we-use CSR travel credit (wallet) |
One short contrast only. For how Platinum and Reserve fit the wider wallet, see Platinum vs Reserve. Do not treat this section as a CSR guide.
Calendar / Dec 31
Unused airline fee capacity dies with the calendar year pattern. Link your plan to credits expiring Dec 31 and the Dec 31 tracker. In January the credit resets and the airline change window opens (once, if you already selected).
FAQ
Does Wi-Fi count?
Usually no. Terms cite wireless internet as a fee not charged by the selected airline; Credit Intel excludes wireless internet from entertainment examples. Do not promise Wi-Fi credits.
Do paid refreshments / drinks count?
Paid in-flight refreshments charged by the selected airline are an explicit product-page example. "Free drinks" as a lounge amenity is not this credit.
Can I change airlines in July?
Only if you have not selected yet. If already selected, the change window is January (once).
Do Additional Cards get their own $200?
No. They share the same per Card Account cap.
How long does the credit take to post?
Benefit terms: allow 6 to 8 weeks; call if missing after 8 weeks. Prefer that over FAQ marketing that says typically 2 to 4 weeks.
Is Hawaiian or Spirit on the list?
Benefit terms we fetched named six carriers (Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, United). Travel FAQ the same night still listed Hawaiian and Spirit too. Prefer the benefit-terms six; confirm your own selection UI; lists are subject to change.
What to do next
- Confirm (or make) your airline selection before any incidental spend.
- Charge only fees billed by that selected airline as separate non-ticket charges.
- Favor product-page examples (bags, refreshments, change fees, lounge day passes, pet kennel, phone reservation) over marketing expansions.
- Do not plan on Wi-Fi.
- Allow 6 to 8 weeks for the statement credit; call after 8 if needed.
- Track remaining calendar-year capacity against credits expiring Dec 31 if Q4 is still open.
