How we make money: This page has no affiliate, referral, or paid links. We earn nothing if you open, keep, or cancel any card mentioned here. If we ever add a paid link, it will be labeled "Paid link" right next to it, and this box will change. Card terms change often, so check the issuer's site before you book or spend.
Independent site: PointFam is an independent site for families who use cards and points for travel. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Defense or any branch of the U.S. military. None of these cards is an "official" military card. Views are the author's own.
Not advice: Nothing on this page is legal, tax, or financial advice. Credit terms, enrollment rules, and eligibility windows are set by the issuer and can change without notice. Check your own Amex account, Delta SkyMiles account, and the current companion and award terms before you rely on a number below.
Last verified: October 6, 2026. Rules below follow American Express Delta SkyMiles Reserve product and companion benefit terms, delta.com Companion Certificates and Award Travel pages, and SkyMiles Program Rules we checked that day, plus verified household notes.
Short version: Pay one eligible Delta cash (or eCredit) primary ticket with your Reserve Card and/or matching-name eCredits, redeem the companion certificate for the second seat on the same reservation in the same class, and pay government taxes and fees on the companion ticket. That path is exactly two passengers. Put additional family on SkyMiles Award Travel as a separate booking when miles and award seats exist. "Free" still means taxes, fees, baggage rules, and fare-class limits. Do not expect one confirmation number for cash + certificate + awards.
We use the Delta SkyMiles Reserve companion certificate. We also use free bags, Sky Club, and points from flying on this card. This page does not claim a lived cash + companion + award-passenger family itinerary, dollar savings, or tax-surprise diary. Those details stay open: Until then, the stack below is researched mechanics: what holders can do and what Amex / Delta pages say.

What the companion certificate is (and is not)
After your Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card Account renews each year, a Companion Certificate is made available for redemption on delta.com in the Card Account renewal month. If the anniversary month changes (for example after Card replacement), it is awarded in the new renewal month. Framed as a renewal benefit, not a first-year open bonus on current product marketing.
Delta marketing: expiration is typically about one year from issue. Travel must be booked and completed (fully flown) by the date on the certificate. Validity is not calendar-year based. Confirm the printed date before you lock flights.
Eligible cabins (terms list)
Reserve companion benefit terms list: Delta First, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, and Delta Main. Product-page marketing often lists First, Comfort, and Main and omits Premium Select. Use the terms list, which includes Premium Select.
Not eligible:
- Delta Basic experiences (for example Delta Main Basic / Basic Economy)
- Delta One seats
Booking class inventory (Reserve terms)
Tickets may not be available on all flights or markets. When inventory exists, terms name these booking classes:
| Cabin | Fare classes |
|---|---|
| Delta Main | L, U, T, X, V |
| Delta Comfort | W, S (only when L/U/T/X/V also available in Main) |
| Delta Premium Select | A, G |
| Delta First | I, Z |
Geography and routing
Terms: round-trip on published routings originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands. Destinations: U.S., Puerto Rico, USVI, Mexico, and the Caribbean / Central America points listed in Reserve companion terms (including Cuba with a compliance note). Confirm the live destination list before you book.
Eligible flights: Delta, Delta Connection, and Delta Shuttle only. Other Delta-designated codeshare flights are excluded. Stopovers, open jaws, and circle trips are not permitted.
Same-time / same-class / same-reservation
Both passengers must be booked at the same time, in the same class of service, on the same reservation, same flights and dates. Terms describe exactly two passengers on the companion redemption: primary + companion. Companion pages do not describe a third passenger on that same companion booking.
Who redeems / who flies (transfer nuance)
Use the benefit terms first, then read marketing against them:
- The Companion Certificate is not transferable and must be redeemed by the Basic Card Member.
- The Basic Card Member need not be one of the two passengers.
- Once issued, the Primary ticket and Companion ticket are not transferable.
- Do not sell or barter the certificate or tickets.
Delta.com marketing sometimes says the certificate is "transferable" because the Card Member does not need to travel. That line is easy to over-read. In practice: BCM redeems; travelers can be any two eligible passengers under booking rules; tickets are not transferable once issued.
Payment for primary + companion issuance
Primary ticket and Companion ticket must be purchased with the Delta SkyMiles Reserve (or Reserve Business) Card and/or eCredits. Companion Certificate and Delta eCredits can be combined in the same transaction; the eCredit name must match the traveler whose ticket is paid. The certificate cannot be combined with another offer or discount (web fares, sale fares, eCoupons, and similar).
A SkyMiles Award Travel ticket is not the companion primary on official pages. Companion payment language names Card and/or eCredits only. Whether Pay with Miles (miles discount + Card for the remainder) satisfies that payment sentence is not confirmed on official companion pages for companion primary (FC-DC1 OPEN). Stick to Card and/or eCredits for the primary path here.
Miles / MQD on the pair
Primary ticket accrues miles. Companion ticket does not accrue miles or MQDs. Complimentary Upgrades may apply under Medallion rules; Global/Regional upgrade certificates and paid upgrades OK; not eligible for mileage upgrades.
Delta Vacations path
The certificate may apply to the eligible flight portion of a Delta Vacations package (delta.com Vacations paths or Vacations Customer Engagement). Hotel, car, and activities still cost. Reserve terms: if Primary or Companion is cancelled on a Vacations package, the entire package is cancelled.
What "free" means (taxes and fees honesty)
The companion ticket is not costless. Keep both tax / fee bands in view.
| Source | Tax / fee language |
|---|---|
| Amex product page + delta.com companion eligibility footnote | Government-imposed taxes and fees of between $22 and $250 (itineraries with up to four flight segments). Baggage charges and other restrictions apply. |
| Amex Reserve Companion Certificate benefit terms + delta.com Reserve terms block | Companion ticket requires payment of government-imposed taxes and fees of no more than $80 round-trip domestic (up to four segments) and no more than $250 round-trip international to eligible destinations (up to four segments). Taxes/fees depend on itinerary; passenger pays at Primary purchase / Companion issuance. Checked bag fees apply. |
The product page is a marketing range. Terms give the domestic / international caps. Both matter. Baggage is separate (see bags section below).
Award passengers (additional family on miles) still pay Award Travel taxes and fees. Domestic Award redemption requires payment of at least $11.20 in U.S. government taxes/fees. International may include up to $600 for foreign government taxes/fees and/or carrier-imposed fees. Awards are subject to availability.
Family stack: one paid + companion + others on points
What official pages support
- Book exactly two passengers on one companion redemption: eligible cash (or eCredit) primary + companion certificate, same PNR, same class, same flights/dates, paid with Reserve Card and/or eCredits, companion taxes/fees paid at issuance.
- Separately, SkyMiles members may book Award Travel for themselves or for someone else (even if the mile-owner is not flying), subject to award availability, taxes/fees, and SkyMiles rules.
- Live SkyMiles Program Rules: All other air travel must be ticketed separately from Award Travel. Prefer that live rule over the stale 2014 Membership Guide PDF.
- TakeOff 15 (Reserve product page + delta.com): 15% off Award Travel with miles on Delta flights via delta.com / Fly Delta app. Not for partner-operated flights or taxes/fees. Additional Card Members are not eligible. Confirm live TakeOff terms at booking.
What official companion pages do not document
- Adding a third (or fourth) passenger onto the same companion certificate reservation as an Award Travel ticket.
- Mixing revenue companion pair + award seats under one confirmation number.
Companion redemption = two passengers. Put additional family on miles as a separate Award Travel booking unless Delta primary sources document a multi-passenger mix on one companion PNR. Same-PNR cash + cert + award is not found on official companion pages (checked Oct 6/7, 2026 CT).
Community reports (based on reports, not an official issuer page): families book the companion pair on one PNR and extra travelers on separate PNRs; agents may seat-link; schedule changes can split parties. Treat those as community practice, not Amex / Delta terms.
Class matching and award blackouts
Companion pair: both must match eligible class inventory above. Award passengers on a separate PNR follow award availability; companion terms do not force them to match the companion pair's class. Practical seating / upgrade notes beyond Medallion pages stay based on reports, not an official issuer page. Awards are subject to availability. Award marketing: no blackout dates on Delta-operated flights; partner blackouts may apply. Companion blackouts follow the Primary ticket fare rules (not a separate companion blackout calendar).
Family cost picture (no sample city-pair dollars)
Cash outlay floor is roughly one primary fare + companion taxes/fees (dual bands above) + bags if not waived + award taxes/fees for other passengers + any seat or ancillary charges. Miles outlay is award mileage for additional passengers (TakeOff 15 may cut the Delta-operated award mileage portion if eligible). Skip invented sample city-pair savings.
Interaction with free bags (DR5 / DR6)
Bag fee waivers are reservation-scoped. They follow the traveling Basic Card Member, not the certificate alone.
First checked bag free (DR5)
Basic Card Members only (not Additional). First standard checked bag free on Delta flights worldwide (not overweight / oversize). Same-reservation companions also get the waiver; maximum nine waivers per reservation (BCM + up to eight companions). Reservation must include BCM SkyMiles number. Delta-marketed and Delta-operated when check-in with Delta; codeshare not eligible. Not available if the passenger already receives one or more free checked bags (itinerary, Medallion, active-duty military, and similar).
Second checked bag free domestic (DR6)
Basic Card Members only; BCM must be a passenger traveling on the same reservation. Origin and destination within U.S. 48 / Alaska / Hawaii / Puerto Rico / USVI. Same Delta-marketed + Delta-operated / no codeshare rules. Once per Eligible Card per direction of travel on a qualifying itinerary.
Companion stack implications
If BCM is one of the two on the companion PNR, first-bag waivers can cover both travelers on that PNR (within the nine-waiver cap), and second bag may apply for BCM under DR6 domestic rules. If BCM is not traveling (allowed for the certificate), bag waivers do not automatically cover the two non-BCM travelers. Award passengers on a separate PNR: bag waivers do not jump PNRs. Family trap: kids on the companion PNR without BCM, BCM on a separate award PNR, then expecting bags on the companion PNR. Confirm who is on which confirmation number before you plan free bags.
Gotchas checklist
| # | Gotcha | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic / Main Basic ineligible | Book eligible Main / Comfort / Premium Select / First inventory only. |
| 2 | Delta One ineligible | Companion certificates cannot purchase Delta One seats. |
| 3 | Codeshares excluded | Companion eligible flights are Delta / Connection / Shuttle only; bags also fail codeshares. |
| 4 | Blackouts follow Primary fare | No standalone companion blackout list. Awards: no blackouts on Delta-operated; partners may blackout. |
| 5 | Advance purchase / stay | Most fares require up to 14-day advance purchase, 3-night minimum stay, 30-day maximum stay; all follow Primary fare rules. |
| 6 | Expiration | Book and fully fly by certificate date; not calendar-year based; typically ~1 year from issue. |
| 7 | Cancel linkage | Cancel Primary or Companion and both cancel; wholly unused pair can auto-reissue certificate with original expiration; partial use forfeits remainder. |
| 8 | Card cancel / downgrade | Delta may cancel / rescind / void certificate if Card cancelled or downgraded within 60 days of annual fee bill date. |
| 9 | Sale / barter | Selling or bartering certificate or tickets voids them. |
| 10 | Vacations | Flight portion only for cert; package components still cost; cancel can kill whole package under Reserve terms. |
| 11 | Who can be companion | No relationship restriction in Reserve companion terms fetched; any passenger pair is OK if BCM redeems and booking rules met. Terms require certain adult round-trip fares for qualifying tickets; child-fare companion path is not confirmed beyond that adult-fare language (FC-DC4 OPEN). |
| 12 | Pay with Miles / Award as primary | Award Travel is not the companion primary on official pages. Pay with Miles as Card and/or eCredits payment stays not confirmed / FC-DC1 OPEN. |
| 13 | Separate PNRs for extra family | Expect separate award bookings; seat-link / schedule-change risk is based on reports, not an official issuer page. |
| 14 | Taxes still due | Companion taxes/fees and award taxes still apply; bags may still cost if overweight or benefits do not apply. |
How to redeem (delta.com path)
UI clicks may drift; confirm on delta.com before you book:
- Certificate appears after renewal in your SkyMiles wallet / Profile under Certificates, eCredits and Vouchers, or via delta.com/redeem (SkyMiles lookup or 8-character code).
- Select the certificate; search eligible flights; Trip Summary shows the certificate applied.
- Pay Primary + companion taxes/fees with the Reserve Card and/or matching-name eCredits.
- Optional: Redeem for Vacations for the eligible flight portion of a Delta Vacations package.
- Confirm the travel-by date on the certificate before locking dates.
For the separate award passengers: book Award Travel on delta.com or the Fly Delta app when award seats exist; pay award taxes/fees; apply TakeOff 15 if you are an eligible Basic Card Member on a fully Delta / Delta Connection operated itinerary.
Where this sits in the wallet
This dig-in is the deep "how to use the companion certificate" page under the Delta SkyMiles Reserve super guide. The super guide keeps the card checklist short; this page owns same-PNR rules, tax honesty, bags interaction, and the separate-award family stack.
Six-card wallet context (Platinum, CSR, Aspire, CSP, Delta Reserve, Double Cash): six-card wallet routine. How Platinum and Reserve fit together: Platinum vs Reserve. Benefit series hub: Use Every Benefit.
A sibling CSR weekend / hotel stack may combine later. Keep that researched-only here (/articles/csr-weekend-trip-for-free-stack/ when live).
Annual fee context (not a fee-waiver claim): Reserve $650; Additional Reserve $175; Additional Delta SkyMiles Platinum Cards on the account have no annual fee. Earn: 3X on Delta purchases made directly with Delta; 1X elsewhere. MLA / SCRA for co-brands remains call-to-confirm, not a promised $0. Year-end wallet timing: credits expiring Dec 31 and the Dec 31 tracker. Companion validity follows the certificate date, not Dec 31.
FAQ
Is the companion ticket actually free?
No. You still pay government-imposed taxes and fees. Keep both bands in view: marketing $22 to $250 (up to four segments) and terms caps of no more than $80 domestic / no more than $250 international (up to four segments). Bags and other restrictions can still apply.
Can three of us book on one companion certificate reservation?
Official terms describe exactly two passengers on the companion redemption. Extra family on miles should be a separate Award Travel booking. There is no third seat on the companion PNR in those terms.
Can we put cash + certificate + award seats on one confirmation number?
Official companion pages do not document that mix. Treat it as not found / separate bookings. Community same-trip multi-PNR practice is based on reports, not an official issuer page, only.
Does the Basic Card Member have to fly?
No. Terms: BCM must redeem; BCM need not be one of the two passengers. Tickets are not transferable once issued. Lean on that terms language, not the marketing "transferable" line alone.
Do we get free bags if BCM is not on the companion PNR?
Not under current bag rules as written. First-bag same-reservation waivers require the BCM on that reservation; second-bag domestic waivers require a traveling BCM. Bag waivers do not jump from an award PNR onto a separate companion PNR.
Is Premium Select eligible?
Yes per Reserve companion terms (and delta.com Reserve cabin table). Product-page marketing bullets often omit it. Use the terms list.
Can Basic Economy or Delta One use the certificate?
No. Basic experiences and Delta One seats are not eligible.
Can Pay with Miles be the companion primary?
Not confirmed for companion primary. Companion payment language names Reserve Card and/or eCredits only. Treat Pay with Miles as outside that path until primary sources say otherwise.
Do award passengers still owe taxes?
Yes. Domestic awards at least $11.20 U.S. taxes/fees; international may include up to $600 foreign taxes/fees and/or carrier-imposed fees.
Does TakeOff 15 help the award passengers?
It can on fully Delta / Delta Connection operated Award Travel booked on delta.com or the Fly Delta app when you are an eligible Basic Card Member. It does not cut taxes/fees, partner-operated flights, Pay with Miles, or Miles + Cash. Additional Cards are not eligible.
Can a child be the companion ticket?
Terms require certain adult round-trip fares for qualifying tickets. A child-fare companion path beyond that language is not confirmed.
What to do next
- Confirm your companion certificate is in the SkyMiles wallet and note the travel-by date.
- Search eligible Main / Comfort / Premium Select / First inventory (not Basic, not Delta One).
- Book exactly two passengers same time / same class / same reservation; pay with Reserve Card and/or matching-name eCredits; pay companion taxes/fees.
- If more of the family is flying on miles, book a separate Award Travel reservation; pay award taxes/fees; apply TakeOff 15 only if eligible.
- Put the traveling Basic Card Member on the reservation where you need bag waivers; do not assume bags follow the certificate alone.
- Track other wallet credits against credits expiring Dec 31 and the Dec 31 tracker; companion validity follows the certificate date, not Dec 31.
